Varian Chosen to Equip First Government Owned Proton Center in China

PALO ALTO, Calif., July 27, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Varian Medical Systems (NYSE: VAR), today announced it has been selected to install and service its ProBeam® proton therapy system in the new multi-room Hefei Ion Medical Center (HIMC) being built in Hefei, Anhui Province, China.  The company booked the order for the equipment as well as its ARIA® information management and Eclipse treatment planning software in the third quarter of its fiscal year 2016.

HIMC will be the first government-owned proton therapy center in China. When completed, the center will feature three proton therapy treatment rooms with full 360 degree rotational gantries as well as facilities for fixed-beam treatments and research. Equipment installation is expected to take place in late 2017 and be in use by the end of 2018.

Varian's ProBeam system is the first to offer fully-integrated intensity modulated proton therapy (IMPT) to enable more efficient adaptive proton therapy. The Varian's pencil beam scanning technology gives clinicians the ability to deliver the dose precisely in the tumor to minimize dose to healthy tissue. When combined with cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), the ProBeam system enables advanced adaptive therapy during the course of treatment helping to make it the most precise form of proton therapy available.

"We are happy to collaborate with Varian on a long term cooperative relationship to benefit cancer patients in China and make HIMC an internationally respected proton treatment center," said Bin Li, director of HIMC. "Varian was selected through a public tender bidding process involving multiple vendors from around the world."

"We are very pleased to be selected as the proton therapy solution provider for HIMC," said Dr. Moataz Karmalawy, general manager of Varian's Particle Therapy division. "We will work closely with the clinic to make this advanced cancer fighting technology accessible to patients across China."

Varian's ProBeam technology is being used to treat patients at the Scripps Proton Therapy Center in San Diego, the Maryland Proton Therapy Center in Baltimore, the Rinecker Proton Therapy Center in Munich, and at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland.  Varian is also working on system installations at ten other sites around the world.
